In short: An injection treatment that stimulates the body's own repair of weakened ligaments and tendons around the spine, limb joints and jaw.

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy (proliferation therapy) injects a mild irritant solution, typically concentrated dextrose, into damaged or lax ligaments and tendons. The controlled inflammatory response encourages new collagen and strengthens the structure, aiming to improve joint stability and reduce chronic pain. It is offered for spinal ligaments, limb joints such as the knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle, and the jaw (TMJ).

At a glance

  • Korean name: 증식치료
  • Performed or prescribed by: Dr. Ji Seung-hun, neurosurgeon
  • Where: Yonsei Leaders Neurosurgery Clinic, 1 minute from Balgok Station Exit 2, Uijeongbu

How it works, step by step

  1. Assessment to confirm a ligament or tendon source of pain.
  2. Ultrasound used to map the injection sites.
  3. Several small injections along the ligament or tendon attachment.
  4. Advice on activity during the healing response.

Conditions it is used for

  • Tennis Elbow: Pain on the outside of the elbow from overused forearm tendons, common in office workers, cooks and parents as well as racket players.

  • Ankle Sprain: Stretching or tearing of ankle ligaments after rolling the ankle, with swelling and bruising.
  • Chronic Lower Back Pain: Back pain lasting more than three months, usually from a combination of joint, disc and muscle factors that needs a structured plan.
  • Jaw Joint Pain: Pain, clicking or limited opening of the jaw joint, often linked to clenching, grinding and stress.

  • Aims for longer-term stability rather than masking pain
  • No surgery or downtime in most cases
  • Useful for chronic ligament laxity
