A precise injection that blocks the small sensory nerves carrying pain from an arthritic or irritated joint, such as the knee, shoulder or spinal facet joints.

In short: A precise injection that blocks the small sensory nerves carrying pain from an arthritic or irritated joint, such as the knee, shoulder or spinal facet joints.

What is Joint Nerve Block?

Joints such as the knee, shoulder and the small facet joints of the spine send pain signals through tiny sensory nerves. A joint nerve block locates these nerves with ultrasound or C-Arm imaging and surrounds them with medication, reducing pain without an incision. It is particularly useful for older patients with degenerative joint pain who are not ready for, or not suited to, joint surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Which joints can be treated with a nerve block?

Commonly the knee, shoulder, hip and spinal facet joints. The doctor confirms the joint is the source of pain before treating.

Is it the same as a steroid injection into the joint?

Not exactly. A nerve block targets the nerves that carry pain from the joint, while an intra-articular injection places medication inside the joint space. Sometimes both are used.

How long does relief last?

It varies from weeks to several months. Using the pain-free window to strengthen surrounding muscles helps the result last longer.
