In short: Narrowing of the spinal canal that squeezes nerves, typically causing leg pain, heaviness or numbness when walking that eases on sitting or bending forward.

What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis develops when thickened ligaments, bone spurs and bulging discs gradually narrow the space for the nerves. It is most common after 50. The classic symptom is neurogenic claudication: legs that ache, cramp or feel heavy after walking a short distance, relieved by sitting or leaning on a shopping cart.

Common symptoms

  • Leg pain or heaviness when walking
  • Relief when sitting or bending forward
  • Numbness or tingling in both legs
  • Lower back ache
  • Reduced walking distance

What causes it?

  • Age-related degeneration
  • Thickened ligamentum flavum
  • Facet joint arthritis
  • Spondylolisthesis

How it is diagnosed at Yonsei Leaders

History of walking tolerance, examination and MRI to measure canal narrowing.

Non-surgical treatment options

  • Epidural Adhesiolysis: A thin, flexible catheter is guided into the epidural space to loosen scar-like adhesions around nerves and wash out inflammatory substances, an…
  • C-Arm Guided Spinal Injection: A spinal injection delivered under live X-ray (C-Arm) guidance so medication reaches the exact inflamed nerve or joint, with no incision and no…
  • Selective Spinal Nerve Block: An injection that calms an irritated spinal nerve root, confirmed on C-Arm imaging, to reduce radiating pain into the arm or leg.
  • Rehabilitation and Corrective Exercise: Guided strengthening, stabilisation and mobility exercise to rebuild support around the spine and joints and prevent pain from returning.
  • Physical Therapy: Yonsei Leaders' staged physical therapy programme: Heat, Electro, Align and Loosen, combining heat, electrical stimulation, manual alignment and…

Your plan is tailored after examination; many patients combine a targeted procedure with manual therapy and exercise for longer-lasting results.

Frequently asked questions

Can spinal stenosis be treated without surgery?

Many people improve their walking distance and pain with epidural adhesiolysis, image-guided injections and exercise. Surgery is considered when non-surgical care fails.

Why does stenosis feel better when I sit down?

Bending forward slightly opens the spinal canal and takes pressure off the nerves.
